My favorite things about my little man include his never ending energy and his love of the outdoors. He is always on the go with antics that simultaneously freeze my heart in fear and make me laugh out loud (talk about sending mixed messages!). He loves all balls, but is especially enchanted by any ball currently in use by people older than him. We have no backyard, no outside space. Therefore, he has determined that my living room is his jungle gym, our concrete floors his grass, and sometimes, the stairs his slide. He holds his own soccer tournaments in my kitchen; catch takes place in the hallway and music jam sessions on the coffee table. Needless to say, it is very intense and necessitates frequent and long trips to the park to maintain my sanity. So, after packing up everything we might need for the next 1 – 2 hours, we make our way the two blocks to the park where the little man plays only with the items brought by other children and the basketball a group of guys are trying to use for a game of pickup. I really, and I mean really, miss having a backyard – space where he can run, kick, throw, climb, slide, explore, create, imagine, and learn without my nagging. When we were in Austin, we stayed with our good friends who have a fantastic backyard – grass, play structure, covered patio, trampoline. In a refreshing change of pace, we sat outside on a gorgeous Sunday afternoon beer in hand, while the kids got into all kinds of secure mischief. It was the most relaxing day I’d had in a long time. I was able to just enjoy my son and his antics – no worries, no constant interruptions, and no stroller loaded down with stuff. Cheers Austin!
